What is Sitemap – Importance & Use

sitemapMost of the SEO Tips will advice you to make a sitemap effectively. So have you ever thought much about building up a sitemap? If not, you should.

What is Sitemap?

A sitemap is one of the most popular ways to improve your Website’s position in the search engine results. It is an index of the links inside a website/blog. This will allow Search engines to find all the pages of a website for indexing and updating it. With a large number of free tools and codes available on internet, it is very easy to implement and use sitemaps for any website or blog.

Usually, Main search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask etc. Use sitemap of websites as a tool to index the pages. Otherwise, it is hard to find all pages of a website which is linked from the corner of a website homepage. Thus main corporate websites and even starter blogs uses Sitemap as a way of making their website/blog highly indexed and updated with Search engines.

Why Should we need a Sitemap?

There are certain factors which makes sitemap a part of website/blog. They are listed below:

  • In the new generation Web Designing, Most of the websites use non-HTML links, such as Macromedia Flash menus or JavaScript menus. For such features, most of the search engines will not be able to follow these links, so they will will find difficulty in finding all the pages. A code-driven website must use a sitemap so that all the content are indexed and cached by search engines which gives high SERPS for your niche.
  • A sitemap shows the search engines which pages on your site are more important, and which are less important compared to others. This prevents the less important pages from competing with your own pages in the listings and creating a hierarchical level among the pages.
  • A sitemap shows the search engines which pages on your site are updated more frequently than others. This enables the search engines to give lower importance to your static pages that they will have the most current data on your most dynamic pages are indexed within hours of creation.
  • A sitemap tells the search engines when you have added or updated your website content. To some extent, this puts you in control of making the search engines aware of your latest content. It acts as a ping to search engine for informing about latest updated content.
